Uses
The primary applications of Gingko that have been studied are its circulatory and antiplatelet action. Its circulatory action comes mainly from its antioxidant abilities, which inhibit the platelet activating factor (PAF).The PAF, like free radicals, have the power to erode vascular membranes, thus altering cerebral blood flow, the neuronal metabolism, and neurotransmitter activity. The flavonoids in ginkgo act as free radical scavengers while the terpenes inhibit the PAF.The antiplatelet action of ginkgolides is exerted mainly on the PAF membrane platelet receptors via a competitive inhibition mechanism. Its anti-inflammatory effect is due to the ginkgolides, and their antioxidant effect is due to the flavonoids, which prevent the peroxidation of lipids.
A vitamin B complex supplement helps reduce the homocysteine.A high level of homocysteine is considered a risk factor in the development of dementia and Alzheimer's disease; it is also negatively associated with overall cognitive and memory performance.Studies exist showing that a vitamin B complex helps improve cognitive functions and memory in older adults.
